Chainsaw Safety
Chainsaw Safety
If there’s one thing we can learn from slasher movies, it’s that some tools around the house require stronger safety precautions than others. Chainsaws are definitely one of those tools. That’s why Stanley & Son Inc. has provided some tips to help you stay safe while you’re using your chainsaw. If you need more help, stop by our location in Nebo, Kentucky and let one of our friendly staff know how we can assist you.
Built-In Features
Chainsaws themselves come with their own built-in safety features. This includes a number of safety switches that automatically shut down the machine if something goes wrong. That can include a chain brake, a stop switch, and more. You might also get anti-vibration features to protect your joints and things like a hand guard can protect you from kickback.
Protective Gear
But just because the chainsaw is doing some of the work, doesn’t mean you won’t have to do your part. You’ll need to be wearing proper safety gear, especially things like eye protection, gloves, and long sleeves, leg protection and boots, and a hard hat. And don’t forget earplugs. Chainsaws are loud and prolonged exposure to those kinds of decibel levels can damage your hearing.
Proper Technique and Feeling the Cut
You’ll also want to make sure you’re using the saw properly. One of the biggest issues is the “kickback zone” right at the tip of the saw. Trying to use this area for cutting can cause the machine to abruptly push against you (hence the name) and not only hurts but can be dangerous. Maintain a firm grip on the saw and familiarize yourself with what’s most natural for your particular saw.
